The study said nearly 400 stalagmite pieces, totaling about 2.2 metric tons, were moved and placed in a structured layout. Researchers reported the results in the journal Nature on May 25, 2016.
The structures sit about 336 meters, or roughly 1,100 feet, from the cave entrance. According to the study, the formations include two main rings and several smaller stacks. Scientists also documented evidence of fire, including burned and reddened material on some of the broken cave formations.

The confirmed site is Bruniquel Cave in southwestern France, where the formations remained sealed for tens of thousands of years. Researchers said the age estimate was based on uranium-thorium dating of the calcite formations, which placed the construction at 176,500 years ago, with a margin of about 2,000 years.
