The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation said in its latest operating projections that Lake Powell is expected to decline more quickly than earlier models suggested, with low snowpack runoff reducing how much water reaches the reservoir in 2025. Lake Powell, formed by Glen Canyon Dam, has a storage capacity of roughly 24 million acre-feet, making it the second-largest reservoir in the United States by capacity. Reclamation’s monthly updates are used by basin states, utilities, and dam operators to plan releases and power operations.

The new outlook matters because Lake Powell helps regulate flows from the Upper Basin to the Lower Basin under long-standing Colorado River rules. Reclamation has confirmed that lower reservoir elevations can affect hydropower generation at Glen Canyon Dam, which supplies electricity to customers in several Western states.
