Why the risk stays elevated across the Ring of Fire

The Ring of Fire is driven by plate tectonics, not by a short-term surge that scientists have confirmed as unusual across the entire basin. The USGS said most of the belt’s biggest earthquakes happen at subduction zones, where one tectonic plate dives beneath another and stores stress for years or centuries. When that stress is released, it can produce major shaking and, in some offshore events, tsunamis.
For residents, that means the highest risk is not evenly spread across the Pacific map. It is concentrated in places with known active faults and subduction margins, including coastal Alaska, coastal Washington and Oregon, much of California, and island areas such as Hawaii, Guam, and American Samoa, according to federal and state hazard maps.
