The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season forecast has put fresh attention on how ocean and atmosphere patterns can reshape storm risk across the country. This time, the focus is on El NiƱo and how it could change where hurricane impacts are more likely to show up, especially along parts of the Gulf Coast and Southeast. Federal forecasters said the season outlook reflects both expected storm counts and where steering patterns could alter local threats.

NOAA says El NiƱo can shift how the season plays out

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its 2024 Atlantic hurricane season outlook on May 23, 2024, and said the season could bring 17 to 25 named storms. NOAA also said 8 to 13 of those storms could become hurricanes, with 4 to 7 reaching major hurricane strength.

In the same outlook, NOAA said El NiƱo was expected to weaken while ocean temperatures remained unusually warm across the Atlantic basin. That matters because NOAA stated that El NiƱo can increase upper-level winds that sometimes disrupt Atlantic storm development, even as very warm water can still support stronger systems.

What is confirmed is the national forecast range and the role large climate patterns may play. What is not known is which exact states will take a direct hit, because NOAA does not issue landfall forecasts in its seasonal outlook.

Gulf and Southeast states may see a different kind of risk

For states along the Gulf Coast and Southeast, the key issue is not just how many storms form but how tracks and rainfall threats could vary as El NiƱo changes. NOAA said seasonal outlooks cannot predict where storms will go months in advance, so no state-specific strike list has been released.

That means Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas are all still in the broader zone of concern during the June 1 to November 30 season. The confirmed timeline is the 6-month Atlantic season, but the exact local impact for each coastline is not yet known.

The practical takeaway for residents is limited but clear. Even if El NiƱo reduces some ingredients for Atlantic development, NOAA said one landfalling storm can define a season for a community.

Why forecasters are watching competing signals this year

The broader context is that forecasters are balancing two different signals in 2024. NOAA said the expected fade of El NiƱo could remove some of the wind shear that often limits Atlantic storms, while record or near-record Atlantic warmth could continue fueling storm formation.

Colorado State University, in its April 2024 outlook, also projected an active season and cited warm Atlantic waters and the likely transition away from El NiƱo. That matches NOAA’s explanation that the atmosphere may become more favorable for storm growth as the season progresses.

For travelers, beach towns, and coastal residents, the main expectation is a season with elevated uncertainty at the local level and a high ceiling for impacts if storms approach land. NOAA said seasonal forecasts estimate overall activity, not neighborhood-level outcomes, so state-by-state risk will become clearer only as individual systems develop.
