This Summer Was the Hottest Ever Recorded in Parts of Europe. Climate change is no longer a hoax
Across the globe, 2024 continued a run of exceptional heat documented by major climate agencies. In Europe, new data from the EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service and national weather offices showed that parts of the continent experienced their hottest summer ever recorded, with repeated heat waves affecting travel, health, and daily life. The findings matter well beyond Europe because U.S. agencies, including NOAA and NASA, have reported the same long-term warming trend in recent years.
Europe’s summer heat set records in multiple countries

On September 5, 2024, the Copernicus Climate Change Service said summer 2024 was the hottest on record for Europe as a whole, with average temperatures for June through August reaching record levels in several regions. Spain’s AEMET weather agency said the country had its warmest August on record, while Meteo France and other national services reported repeated periods of extreme heat across western and southern Europe. Those findings were based on instrument records and long-running national climate datasets.
In Italy, Greece, and the Balkans, national authorities also tracked prolonged heat waves during July and August 2024. Copernicus said southeastern Europe saw especially intense conditions, including multiple days well above seasonal norms. The World Meteorological Organization has stated that Europe is warming faster than the global average, a point it repeated in recent regional climate updates.
Southern Europe saw the sharpest local impacts

The strongest local effects were confirmed in countries along the Mediterranean, including Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, and parts of France. In Athens, authorities used heat-related work restrictions during summer 2024, and in Spain several regions issued red or orange heat alerts, according to national and local officials. Wildfire risk also rose during peak heat periods, especially in Greece and Portugal, where emergency agencies reported fast-moving fires during parts of July and August.
What is not yet fully clear is the final season-by-season breakdown for every city or province across Europe. Copernicus publishes continent-wide and regional averages, but not every municipality releases a full summer record summary on the same schedule. That means some local “hottest ever” designations are confirmed nationally, while others are still being finalized by national meteorological agencies.
Scientists tie the extreme heat to long-term warming

Scientists have been careful to separate weather from climate, but they have also been direct about the trend. Copernicus, the WMO, NOAA, and NASA have all said greenhouse gas emissions are driving long-term global warming, which increases the likelihood and intensity of extreme heat. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has reached the same conclusion across multiple assessment reports, including its most recent synthesis work.
For travelers and residents, the practical effect is straightforward: hotter summers are disrupting transportation, outdoor work, tourism schedules, and public health planning in places that millions of Americans visit each year. Airlines, rail systems, and local governments across Europe have already issued heat-related guidance during recent summers, and public agencies increasingly plan around longer hot spells. The broader climate record now shows these events are not isolated outliers but part of a documented warming pattern.
