A lot of things once called “just conspiracy theories” about Big Tech did not stay theories for long. In case after case, regulators, courts, whistleblowers and the companies themselves confirmed that some of the public’s biggest suspicions were real.
That matters because these stories shaped how Americans think about privacy, competition, children online and the power a few companies hold over everyday life. Here are six of the clearest examples.
Phones really were listening for ads? Not exactly, but devices were collecting far more than users knew

For years, one of the most common fears in tech was that phones were somehow listening to private conversations and turning them into ads. The broad claim remains overstated, and major platforms have repeatedly said they do not use live microphone recordings to target ads in the simple way people often imagine. Still, investigations and company disclosures showed that devices and apps were gathering far more signals than many users understood.
In 2019, Apple, Google, Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft all faced scrutiny over human contractors reviewing audio from voice assistants and speech systems. Reports showed workers sometimes heard private exchanges, accidental recordings and sensitive material. Apple later said it had “not fully lived up” to its ideals and changed Siri review practices after public backlash.
The deeper truth was less cinematic but still serious. Phones did not need to constantly eavesdrop to infer what users were discussing, buying or worrying about. Location history, app activity, contacts, browsing patterns and ad-tech data brokers created detailed profiles that often felt uncomfortably close to mind reading. To many users, the distinction between active listening and hyper-detailed surveillance was not much comfort.
That is why this once-dismissed fear landed with so much force. The theory was wrong in its simplest form, but the larger suspicion was confirmed: Big Tech had built systems capable of knowing far more about people than the public had clearly agreed to share.
Social media platforms did track people across the internet, even after they logged out

For years, privacy advocates warned that Facebook and other major platforms were following users well beyond their own apps and websites. Many people treated that as exaggerated anti-tech rhetoric. Then regulators, lawsuits and the companies’ own product documents made clear that cross-site tracking was a core part of the business model.
Facebook’s Like buttons, pixels and software development tools helped the company collect data from huge parts of the web. Court records and public reporting showed that browsing activity could still be tied back to users or households, even when they were not actively scrolling Facebook. In Europe, regulators repeatedly fined Meta over data handling and legal basis questions tied to targeted advertising.
Google faced similar criticism over location tracking and web activity collection. In 2022, Arizona settled with Google for $85 million over allegations the company used deceptive practices to obtain users’ location data. Google said it had fixed outdated product policies, but the case reinforced a public concern many had once been told was overblown.
What sounded paranoid in the early 2010s is now basic digital literacy. Ad-tech systems were designed to follow people across devices and services, build profiles and sell precision targeting. The conspiracy theory label faded once the mechanics became impossible to deny.
Big Tech companies really did study how to keep kids hooked

Parents, teachers and child safety groups long argued that social media companies were engineering products to capture young users’ attention and hold it as long as possible. Critics were often dismissed as moral panickers who did not understand modern media. Then leaked internal research, Senate hearings and lawsuits gave those concerns hard evidence.
The clearest example came in 2021, when internal Facebook documents reported by The Wall Street Journal showed the company knew Instagram could worsen body image issues for some teen girls. One slide said, “We make body image issues worse for 1 in 3 teen girls.” Meta said the research was complex and that the reporting did not reflect the full picture, but the documents changed the public debate.
Since then, attorneys general from dozens of states have pursued cases accusing Meta and other firms of designing features that exploit compulsive use by children and teens. Lawsuits have pointed to notifications, endless scroll, algorithmic recommendations and social validation loops as features that drove engagement while increasing mental health risks.
The basic claim turned out to be true in a narrower but important sense. Platforms were not merely popular with kids by accident. They were actively measuring youth behavior, testing product features and optimizing for retention, even as concerns about harm became harder to ignore.
Tech giants did use monopoly-style tactics to crush rivals

Another idea once waved away as anti-business complaining was that a handful of tech firms were not just successful, but using their power to block competition. Over the last several years, antitrust cases in the United States and abroad have moved that claim from opinion into documented legal conflict.
The biggest turning point came with the U.S. government’s antitrust case against Google. In August 2024, a federal judge ruled that Google acted as a monopolist in online search by maintaining exclusive default arrangements and other barriers that protected its dominance. Google has said it disagrees and plans to appeal, but the decision marked one of the most important antitrust rulings against a tech company in decades.
Meta has also faced years of scrutiny over whether its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp were partly meant to neutralize competitive threats. Internal emails aired in investigations and court proceedings fueled arguments that buying fast-growing rivals was not just strategic, but defensive. Meta has denied unlawful conduct and said consumers benefited from its investments.
Even before final outcomes in every case, one point became clear. The suspicion that Big Tech’s biggest players were stacking the deck was not fringe thinking. Regulators found enough evidence to bring sweeping cases, and judges have already agreed in some of the most important ones.
Smart devices and apps really were sharing sensitive data with outsiders

In one notable case, Amazon’s Ring agreed in 2023 to pay $5.8 million to settle FTC allegations tied to privacy and security failures, while Amazon said it disagreed with the claims and had already made improvements.
These cases confirmed the broad public suspicion. Connected products often did not just perform the service buyers thought they were paying for. They also turned homes, routines and health habits into data streams that could move far beyond the device itself.
Platforms really could manipulate what people saw at a massive scale

For years, skeptics said social media companies had the power to quietly shape public opinion by tweaking what users saw, amplifying some topics and burying others. That was often dismissed as a misunderstanding of how algorithms work. Then platform experiments, internal records and public testimony showed that ranking systems were indeed capable of influencing attention at enormous scale.
The best-known proof came from Facebook’s 2014 disclosure that it had conducted an emotional contagion study on nearly 700,000 users by altering the content in their News Feeds. Internal documents suggested Facebook’s own systems sometimes boosted divisive or extreme content because it drove engagement. Similar concerns have hit YouTube, TikTok and X, where recommendation engines have been criticized for steering users toward increasingly intense material.
The theory was never that a single engineer sat in a room controlling minds. It was that algorithmic systems, optimized for growth and engagement, could shape culture, politics and behavior in ways users barely understood. On that point, the evidence is now overwhelming.
