AI chatbots are now part of daily life for students, workers, travelers, and families across the United States. But as use grows, so do warnings from privacy advocates, consumer groups, and tech companies about the kinds of questions people should avoid asking.

The biggest concern is not just wrong answers. Experts say the larger risk is that users may hand over private information, rely on unverified advice, or mistake a computer-generated response for a professional judgment.

“What is my medical problem, and how should I treat it?”

Health questions are among the most common prompts entered into AI tools, according to surveys from major consulting firms and health technology researchers. That has alarmed doctors and patient safety groups, which say chatbots can summarize public health information well but are not a substitute for a medical exam, diagnosis, or treatment plan.

Medical experts have repeatedly warned that AI systems can miss context that matters, such as age, pregnancy, allergies, existing conditions, or dangerous drug interactions. A chatbot may also present an answer with calm confidence even when the information is incomplete, outdated, or simply wrong. That can be especially risky when someone is dealing with chest pain, breathing trouble, severe abdominal pain, or mental health crisis symptoms.

The American Medical Association and hospital leaders have said AI can support administrative work and basic education, but patient care still requires licensed professionals. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also regulates medical devices and software for a reason: health decisions can carry life-or-death consequences.

The practical rule from clinicians is straightforward. Do not ask AI to diagnose you, prescribe a treatment, or tell you whether a symptom is an emergency. Use it, at most, to help prepare questions for a doctor, urgent care visit, pharmacist, or nurse line.

Financial questions are another major danger zone, especially when they involve tax filings, retirement savings, wire transfers, or debt payoff strategies. Consumer advocates say people may assume a polished answer is a correct answer, even though AI systems do not know a user’s full financial history unless that person types it in, which creates a second risk: exposing account details and income information.

The Federal Trade Commission has spent the past two years warning the public about scams that use AI-generated language to sound convincing and urgent. Fraud investigators say people are increasingly mixing chatbot advice with online rumors and social media tips, which can lead to bad decisions about crypto investments, loans, or supposed tax loopholes.

Financial planners say even a simple question can become risky if it includes too much personal data. Uploading a tax return, credit report, bank statement, or Social Security number into a public AI system could create privacy problems if the platform stores, reviews, or uses that content to improve its services.

Experts say it is safer to ask AI for general definitions, such as how an IRA works or what APR means, while keeping all personal documents out of the conversation. Anything involving actual tax strategy, investment allocation, debt settlement, or legal obligations should go to a certified professional.

Most major AI companies say their systems are designed to refuse requests involving violent wrongdoing, fraud, hacking, or instructions for evading law enforcement. Still, researchers have shown that determined users can sometimes reword prompts to seek dangerous guidance, which is one reason regulators and safety groups continue to scrutinize generative AI.

Cybersecurity experts say asking AI how to break into an email account, bypass identity checks, clone a hotel key card, or hide digital evidence is not just unethical. In some cases, it could expose a user to criminal liability, workplace discipline, or civil penalties. It also leaves a written trail inside a digital platform that may be reviewed under company policy or legal process.

This matters beyond obvious crime. Even prompts that seem smaller, such as how to fake a doctor’s note, dodge airline baggage fees, or manipulate reimbursement systems, can cross into fraud. Businesses, schools, and government agencies are increasingly updating internal rules to address AI misuse.

Safety analysts say the public should treat AI like any other tool that records inputs and produces content at scale. If a question would be troubling to ask a stranger, a police officer, or a company compliance team, it is probably not a smart thing to ask a chatbot either.

One of the fastest ways to misuse AI is to paste in sensitive personal information without thinking through where it goes. Privacy professionals say users often upload resumes, medical records, contracts, travel itineraries, passwords, school records, or family disputes because they want help organizing them. In many cases, they do not realize they may be sharing far more than necessary.

Technology companies have become more explicit in their user guidance, especially after several high-profile cases in which employees entered confidential business material into public chatbots. Some firms now block or limit consumer AI tools on work devices, while others require staff training on what can and cannot be shared.

For the general public, the rule is simple: never give a chatbot information you would not want exposed in a data breach, legal dispute, or account review. That includes Social Security numbers, passport details, health insurance IDs, bank logins, one-time passcodes, private company data, and personal details about children.

Privacy scholars say people should also think about information involving others. Uploading a friend’s address, a child’s school record, or a spouse’s legal dispute raises consent and confidentiality issues. AI can be useful for drafting and organizing, but sensitive details should be removed or replaced with placeholders first.

The final category may be the most relatable. Many people now use AI to help write wedding vows, compare colleges, plan vacations, update resumes, or practice tough conversations. Experts say that kind of support can be useful. The problem begins when users ask a chatbot to make a life-altering decision that requires human judgment, lived experience, or accountability.

Psychologists and ethicists say AI can mirror language patterns that feel empathetic, wise, or authoritative, which makes it easy to overtrust. A chatbot may appear to “know” whether someone should quit a job, leave a marriage, move across the country, or cut off a family member. In reality, it is predicting plausible text, not weighing consequences in the way a trusted person or trained professional would.

That does not mean AI has no role. Career coaches, teachers, and counselors say it can help people brainstorm options, build question lists, or compare pros and cons in a structured way. Used carefully, it can save time and reduce stress.

Still, experts say the line is clear. Do not ask AI to decide your future, your safety, or your values for you. The safest use is as a tool for research and drafting, not as a stand-in for medical care, legal advice, financial planning, or human relationships.
